Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started?

An introductory lesson is the first step.  This flight will take anywhere from 45-60 minutes and will be unlike anything you've experienced before.  During the flight you will be able to take the controls and get a feel for flying.  After that you will continue with regular flight training.

Can I take an Introductory flight lesson?

Yes you can.  Flight World is a participant in the Discovery Flight Program.  Please click here to learn more.

Is learning to fly difficult?

Flying is learned step by step and isn't as difficult as you may think.  Practically anyone can learn to fly as long as you are willing to invest some time and effort.

How long does it take?

The amount of flight training required varies from student to student.  The national average varies between 60-70 hours.  This includes time spent flying with an instructor (dual instruction) and time spent flying by yourself (solo).  The easiest way to shorten this time and therefore lower cost, is to fly as frequently as possible, and enroll in a ground school.  It is recommended that you fly at least 2-3 times per week.  At this rate it is possible to earn you Private Pilot license in 5-6 months.

What is a Private Pilot certificate?

A Private Pilot certificate is much like a drivers license.  With it, you will be able to fly in and out of any airport of your choice, as well as carry passengers.  You may not, however, fly for compensation or hire, but operating expenses may be shared among other passengers in the airplane.

Are there any discounts available at Flight World?

Yes!  The more you fly our aircraft, per month, the lower your hourly rate.  After the first 2 hours you will receive a 10% discount, after the 6th hour, a 15% discount and after the 10th hour you will see a 25% discount off the hourly rate.  For more information please visit our Rates page.

Do I have to complete a ground school prior to beginning flight training?

There are no requirements for completing a ground school first, but you are encouraged to enroll in one to lower your training cost and further your education.  At the end of your flight training you will be ready to pass both the written and practical tests.  For more information on Flight World's ground schools, please click here.

How do I pay?

There are several methods to pay for flying at Flight World.  We accept both Visa, Master Card, and Discovery.  You may also pay with check or cash.  Our student/renters set up an account from which money will be withdrawn after each flight.

How long are lessons?

The duration of each lesson depends on your schedule and how much time you can devote.  On average, you can expect to spend 30 minutes with a preflight and post flight briefing, as well as 60-90 minutes in the airplane.  These times can change depending on the lesson.  When you schedule a lesson, you should plan to be at Flight World for about 2.5 hours.

What can I do after I get my pilot's license?

Once licensed as a Private Pilot, you are able to fly with family and friends to new and exciting destinations.  Whether it's a short trip for lunch or a family vacation, you'll discover the freedom of being a Private Pilot.

In what aircraft will I train?

Flight World has a fleet of several aircraft and a Redbird Full motion flight simulator in which you can train.  We currently have two Piper Archers for primary training, a Piper Seminole for multi engine training, a Cirrus SR-22 for your longer trips, and a Super Decathlon for tailwheel and spin training.

Will I be able to rent an airplane on my own?

At Flight World you will be able to rent the same airplane in which you trained.  If you were not trained at Flight World, you may rent our aircraft after a checkout with a Flight World Instructor.

How is Flight World different from any other flight school?

When flying with Flight World you can rest easy knowing that you are putting your friends and family into the safest Technically Advanced Aircraft (TAA).  Our instructors, students and renters are proud of our flawless record.  We offer the best flight instruction using flight instructors that are not just interested in "buiding time", but training students to become safe and competent pilots.

Do I need insurance?

It is always a good idea to have renters insurance.  Flight World pays for a Non-Subrogation policy on behalf of our renters to offer an additional level of protection for our pilots.

What are the advantages of flying out of Chicago Executive Airport (PWK)?

Flying out of PWK has many benefits.  You will gain the experience of flying in and out of more complex airspace utilizing an operating control tower, with a higher level and variety of aircraft.  Learning at Chicago Executive will build your confidence level allowing you to fly into any airport in the country.
